Meal Storage Editorial
27/11/2009
It still comes as a surprise to many farmers that they are losing up to 10% of their animal feed through wastage from contamination, vermin and spoilage when they don’t store their feed properly.
With feed suppliers offering significant discounts on bulk purchases of animal feed and with the range of animal feed storage options now available there really is no excuse in not saving money by investing in proper storage facilities.
EC regulation 183/2005 lays down requirements for the storage of animal feeds
- Feed shall be stored separately from chemicals and other products prohibited for animal feed.
- Storage areas and containers shall be kept clean and dry and appropriate pest-control measures implemented where necessary.
- Storage areas and containers shall be cleaned regularly to avoid unnecessary cross-contamination.
Animal feed should be stored in a properly designed silo which protects against:
Vermin – rats, mice and birds can eat and contaminate animal feed that is not stored properly at a surprising rate.
Spoilage – water damage from rain, dampness will quickly render feed useless and ruin the quality of the feed.
The habit of tipping meal into sheds and loft spaces is changing slowly as health and Safety concerns by the animal feed suppliers and a growing awareness of farmers themselves of the dangers involved. The use of silo’s reduces the amount of dust being blown about and breather pipes enable this dust to be gathered and reused.
Moving to a bulk storage system can also benefit the farmer by reducing the amount of lifting of bags which reduces wear and tear on the back.
Properly designed silos should last a lifetime with just a basic level of care.
- It is recommended to empty out the silo every 3 or 4 months.
- Complete a visual inspection. If you see any marking coming through the body of the silo, it is generally a sign that there is feed stuck on the inside.
- Check that no feed is stuck in the silo – if it is, wash it out. Allow the silo to dry before filling.
- Avoid meal caking around the bottom of the cone as this can eat away the cone material over time.
- Remember that feed should not be going into the silo hot as this will cause condensation and the meal to stick together. Most silos have good venting built into them but it is important to be aware of this.
If you are storing your oats or buying them in make sure that you check with your silo supplier that it is ok to store treated oats. Rolled oats treated with acid are notorious for eating through silo walls and cones
Most silo manufacturers strongly advise not to use ration with treacle in it as this can cause bridging and the feed to get stuck in the silo.
